There are several great supplements out there to help cure your dog of these ailments. Some people even give their dogs supplements as a prevention or to get a super glossy coat. It’s also important to note that when bitches are in season, they can experience their coat going away, in some cases supplements can help. Quick Note on Understanding the Problem Before we move on to the best supplements for dogs to take for hair loss and itchy skin, it’s important to understand the cause for your pet’s ailments in order to properly treat them. In most cases, hair loss and/or itchy skin are signs of allergic reactions, but could be caused by something else (like a parasite- fleas or ticks, for example). You could be dealing with a great many things; be sure to have your pet examined by a veterinarian to be sure what! The Importance of SupplementsToday, very few domesticated pet dogs or cats consume anywhere near their original, naturally intended diets. Along with an overwhelming lack of exercise among pets, this is one of the leading reasons why over 50% of pets (dogs, cats- amounting to several million) are considered clinically overweight or obese. Because so many pet foods cut quality ingredients in order to produce an inexpensive product, supplementing ingredients (like the fish oils described below) can be vital to your pup’s health! Omega 3/Omega 6 Fatty Acid Supplements (Fish Oils) Contained in high amounts in fish oils, both Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are well known to be very beneficial for a dog’s skin and coat! If you want a sleek, shiny coat and healthy skin for your pet, place a focus on these. On top of supplements, you can give your dog an egg every so often for his/her skin/coat health, also a good source of omega fatty acids. If you are careful about the pet food you purchase, and make sure to buy a quality brand, it likely already contains Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids in the fish oils within. In fact, some type of fish is good to have toward the beginning on the list of ingredients labeled on the back of your pet food container, along with animal meat. Dogs have very little need for the corn, peas, wheat, potatoes or other starchy vegetables many brands like to use. ●Try to avoid pet foods with a focus on plant based ingredients. ●Outside of fish like Mackerel, Salmon, Cod or Herring, eggs are also a great source of Omega fatty acids. AllergyTaking an allergy drug isn’t exactly a supplement, but it can be given to dogs for the same reason humans take it, and it will have similar effects. Can’t figure out how to treat your dogs itching or allergies? First, go to your vet for consultation and he might tell you to try out some type of allergy drug (Benadryl for instance - or the active ingredient, and the only ingredient you need- diphenhydramine, which can be purchased alone as well). If you buy your allergy off the counter please make sure you do not buy something that is harmful for your animal, for instance it cannot contain Tylenol. Safer bet is probably getting a prescription from the vet.
