There is a huge variety of breeds available that are perfect for hunting and sports dogs. However, it is hard to train a hunting dog because they are active, and they will often not pay attention to your commands. Every dog has special characteristics and it is important that you train him accordingly. If you think that your hunting dog has reached the age of training here are a few tips that will help you out. Socialization is importantIt is important that your hunting dog is comfortable in the presence of other people and animals. You should start socializing your puppy at a very young age to assure that he will not feel scared or shy. Take your puppy to parks and other locations that people often visit with their dogs. The more it will interact with others the better results you will get in future. Obedience trainingIf you are not comfortable with training your dog, enroll him in the dog training classes where professionals will teach you and your puppy everything. The most important thing that you have to learn is how to gain the attention of your puppy. The dog will only follow your commands if he is obedient and attentive. Teach basic commandsYou should always start with the basic hunting commands once your dog has learned to obey you. It will take a lot of time and patience to train your dog to perfection. In the beginning, your puppy will get distracted so you should keep it simple with
Start from ground zeroIn case that you have not been out for a while and your dog has lost its touch, you will have to start training from the ground zero. It will happen when you have caught something and while your dog was retrieving the animal it got distracted by something else. Treat vs punishmentTraining a hunting dog is not an easy task and you have to be very careful. In case your dog is unable to perform properly avoid punishing the puppy because he might stop trusting you. However, even on the minor success reward him with a treat. It will motivate your puppy to perform better and he will learn quickly. Practise is the keyOnce you think that your dog has learned everything, and he is responding to your commands it is important that you make him practice. Even if you are not going to a hunting session you can repeat the commands to assure that your puppy will not forget. If you will not take your dog for regular exercise and training, it will not only forget what you taught him but also the dog will become fussy and irritated. Plan a proper playing session in the home if it is not possible to go outside. Online training resources
When you go to youtube there are loads of videos that you can watch, just beware that some are better than others :)
You can also get video courses on dog training at for instance udemy. Since my bitch is one year old (we only got her) I want to start her training soon. I have ordered a book on amazon about training, bought my whissle and a training lead. She has already finished her first obedience training :) |
